Challenges
As many of you know, challenges on the mission field often begin before the plane ticket is purchased. Saying farewells of this magnitude feels like mourning a loss, even with the blessing of FaceTime. We were grateful to say goodbye to many of you at our Partner Gathering and Commissioning Service.
Another ongoing challenge has been healthcare. Just two days after we arrived, we changed our phone numbers to UK numbers (they are listed at the bottom of this email). Unfortunately, this disrupted Preston’s continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system. After five doctor visits, we still don’t have the equipment needed to keep it running. We’re hopeful that this week we’ll find direction as we work with both the NHS and a private endocrinology practice.
The last challenge is a natural part of transition. We’re learning brand-new systems (like registering for the NHS) while also re-learning things we once knew instinctively (like navigating the city, reading food labels, or communicating with real estate agents). The only remedy is time and exposure, so please pray for endurance and a sustained sense of humour.
Encouragements
Straight off the plane, our teammates Adam and Laura Watson (and their kids Lucy and Jack) met us with a big “Welcome to London” sign. After a long season of farewells, that first hello meant so much. We taxied with our 8 bags to temporary housing, grateful that nothing broke—and that the house was indeed real!
Since then, we’ve had a team outing in the City of London and training in Winchester. Alongside our evangelistic efforts, we’re receiving excellent ministerial training with Commission Global, the London Project, and our agency Greater Europe Mission (GEM). This training equips us to contextualize the Gospel in London, steward our giftings, and adopt UK culture without losing our Gospel identity. Personally, Preston is reading through Mark and James, while Zoey is studying Luke.
Story Church London Update
Our Story Church core team has 8 members: 4 commissioned and 4 working outside the church. Attendance at gatherings ranges from 15–26, depending on weather, the Tube, or strikes. For now, we meet Sunday evenings in the Watsons’ home, but we may soon move into a more sustainable location.
Taco Tuesday, a missional community hosted weekly by the Watsons, draws people from Ghanaian, Egyptian, Pakistani, American, Spanish, British, and other backgrounds. It’s become a beautiful place to build friendships and shared language so that when the Gospel is shared, it comes from a place of trust and love. Once we’re in our own home, we’ll begin hosting a similar group—though the name is still TBD (Thin-crust Thursday? Waffle Wednesday?).
Thankfulness
We’re rejoicing in God’s goodness for:
- Our visitors! Herb Hotchkiss and the Lawless family. What a gift these people are to us.
-
Temporary housing and the prospect of a long-term flat starting October 16.
-
A possible new Sunday morning location for Story Church.
-
Opportunities to meet a vast amount of people in our first three weeks.
-
Humble, experienced ministry leaders.
-
Surprisingly good weather in this famously rainy city.
-
Financial and prayer provision.
We continue to pray for you all on the days of the month you’ve chosen. (If you haven’t picked a day yet, reply and let us know—we’d love to pray for you specifically.)
Prayer
- Pray for the salvation of London. We want to see Christians being discipled and making disciples. Pray that London would be a hub for sending Christians globally again.
- There is a tennis court right next to our new home. Pray that Preston can develop relationships with those at the court and begin discipling them.
- Pray for our health and for us to find a great Endocrinologist for P and a chiropractor for Z.
