Advent in Your Neighborhood

Advent in Your Neighborhood
Saturday, December 03, 2022, 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM

As we kick off the Advent season, our Elders will be offering Advent Gatherings in some of the communities that make up our Fellowship family: Alpharetta, East Cobb, and Woodstock/Canton.

Why are we doing this?

Advent and Christmas are unique times in today’s cultural reality. It’s not very often you can walk into a grocery store, department store, or local restaurant and hear hymns playing. Many times we hear companies and organizations speaking out against God, but the Good News—the message that God sent His only Son, Jesus, into our world to redeem and restore us—is the foundational truth and basis for the entire holiday that is being celebrated. As followers of Jesus, we have the joy of celebrating and proclaiming that it’s all because of Jesus and there would be no reason to celebrate without Him.

If we see an Advent Gathering as an entryway into our goal of reaching our communities with the Good News of Jesus, then we can engage our communities well. And if our ultimate goal is to see all of our communities transformed by Jesus, then an Advent Gathering is an entry point for engaging our communities and declaring the Gospel to them.

For many of our neighbors who don’t know Jesus, Advent Gatherings provide a space that seems safe and approachable for them. These gatherings help us in the hopes of reaching our communities with the Gospel in several ways. They provide us with opportunities to build relationships with our neighbors; cultivate a sense of community; offer a positive, non-threatening, and fun experience for our non-churched neighbors; and build up other believers in the faith.

How can you get involved?

You can start by identifying some neighbors within your community, those who are Christians and those who are not. Since this isn’t a church event, inviting neighbors who are involved in other local churches is absolutely encouraged. Advent is a great time to invite those who are “de-churched”, hurt by the church, or who have grown cynical toward the church and Christianity.

These gatherings are not about getting people to come to Fellowship Bible Church, but about connecting your neighbors with Jesus and his transforming love, grace, and mercy.
